Flat weave, or plain weave, refers to how the yarn is woven one over, one under. With other patterns, yarn can float over two or more yarns at a time. The float can make the fabric feel softer because the weave is looser (not in a negative way). One potential problem with a pattern where the yarn floats over numerous yarns is that it becomes more susceptable to pulls, snags, nails, toys, that might damage the pattern requiring (often simple do-it-yourself) repairs.
